Arsenal Updated Added a total of 20 new weapons to the gallery today, I’m also working on some other little updates for the project – including a list of my “target” weapons, and some advice on ways to organize and manage collections in game. In Other News I’m hard at work on the new Cataclysm Tanking and Gold guides, not certain of a release date yet. But expect the Tanking guide to be ready in time for Cataclysm. I should note also however, that with the holidays here and the impending expansion release things are going to be a bit crazy. So, I don’t know what my posting schedule is going to be like for a few weeks. I will however be getting screenshots and keeping notes of my adventures in Cataclysm here, so stay tuned.

gasp, two posts in one day! If you’re looking for the weeks gold report look at the Altocaust Edition posted earlier. The Quest for a Worthy Weapon When I first started playing Khaas, I had hoped (as I’m sure many other Death Knights did) that there would be a legendary two-hander from the Lich King. In fact, there was little doubt in my mind, though whether we would get to wield Frostmourne or not was always somewhat questionable. But one cannot simply make a Death Knight and get a Legendary weapon, one has to progress. And as a tank, that progression has been somewhat difficult since unlike a warrior or Paladin I often times have quite a few toes to step on to get something suitable for smacking baddies. For me it started with the Hellreaver from Hellfire Ramparts, then the quest line weapons in Nagarand, Borean Tundra, and Zul’Drak. Finally, I hit eighty and it was time to equip the epic Titansteel Destroyer. I paid a pretty penny to be one of the first on Bloodscalp to swing the thing, and I got my monies worth. I didn’t upgrade the Destroyer till we were farming Ulduar 10 Hard Modes some six months after I first got the mace. I got Aesir’s Edge off of XT, now this was a superior weapon. It looked great, had sockets. And it hit like a truck. Then it was off to the Trials of the Crusader to prepare for the inevitable assault on the stronghold of the Lich King himself, here I claimed Mor’kosh, the Blood Reaver from our first Tribute run. By the time of the release of Icecrown Citadel we had grown strong as a twenty five man guild, and so the officers deliberated. And it was decided that I would receive the guild’s first Shadowmourne. So, the long quest began. I wrote my walk-through as I progressed along the chain until I reached the final grind. I quickly estimated it would take about ten weeks to complete Shadowmourne from that point. (For those curious about the drops, out of 11 bosses it was as follows 4,7, 7, 5, 5, 4, 5, 8, 5) This makes me one of the few (maybe the first for all I know) tanks using this in the world, definitely the only one on Bloodscalp. It is done. Last night was rough for the guild, the attendance boss hit us full force. Yet, we overcame the adversity and in the end an overwhelming majority of those in attendance opted to stay late to clear the last wing in the hopes of getting my last shard. Their dedication was rewarded, as at approximately midnight (Central Standard Time) we killed Professor Putricide and I received my 50th shard. After handing out loot we made way for the entrance for the turn in, inevitable RP from the quest giver and a few screenshots. It is difficult to adequately express my thanks to my guild mates, last night was a...

The Quest for Shadowmourne is a long one, it’s nine quests in one chain with a large amount of grinding and collecting. The numbers involved can be quite daunting, but honestly that’s the easy part. The Infusions are easily the most challenging parts of the chain, requiring finesse and coordination with your guild. This is true for either a tank or DPS trying to complete the quest. As I’ve been working on the quest chain since it was released and am now in the home stretch I decided to write up a Walkthrough for the quest which can be seen linked to the right of the blog, or by following this link [ I is Legend: the Quest for Shadowmourne ] All that being said, I wanted to take a second to officially thank my guild for their hard work. Last night my buddy Rukar and I both completed the Frost Infusion step of the quest chain, putting us in the home stretch for Shadowmourne. I’ll be collecting Shadowfrost Shards first, then Rukar. Last night we were short a number of people (for the third week in a row) and several people stepped up to fill the raid (even one of our top DPS logging a healer alt to make it happen), we breezed through clearing everything but Blood Queen and Lich King before raid time was up. With the exception of some very bizarre RNG issues on BQ we had one helluva night for raiding. Congrats and thanks again for kicking so much ass.

The new wing is open, it’s time to tackle the plagueworks and get back to work on the quest for Shadowmourne…. Finishing the Sacred and the Corrupt With the Plagueworks now open, you are finally able to complete this quest. You’ll need to kill Festergut and Rotface however to get the Acidic Blood needed to finish. Tankspot’s strategy videos: Festergut is the easier of the two, Rotface kept bugging out on us Tuesday night, but was hotfixed by Friday (those oozes not merging made for a real difficult fight, but we still got him to 10% Tuesday). The Acidic Blood is a 100% droprate, each boss only drops 1 at a time. But your guild should already have a pecking order sorted out, which should making doling these out a lot easier. After you get these, take the portal back to the entrance and go to the runeforge next to Darion Mograine on the left (as you enter the instance). Darion will show up, there’s more lightning, smoke, and fire thrown around than at a KISS concert… slowly a form appears hovering in the air between you and Darion, which becomes: Shadow’s Edge. Shadow’s Edge At this point, Darion gets a quest icon over his head and it’s time to accept the quest Shadow’s Edge, he tries to talk you out of taking the weapon (for fear of your immortal soul, lol pussy). Of course you accept, and claim your new axe. A Feast of Souls Now we begin the quest in earnest. Feast of Souls requires you to kill 1000 of the Lich Kings minions in ICC 10 or 25. Originally, it was thought these had to be undead, but not so. First, summoned adds count, such as those lovely Essences called by the Harbingers in Plague. Also, the opposite faction NPCs on the ledge before the Gunship count, as well as all of the adds on the opposing gunship. Even the zombies summoned by Precious count. After doing a run through 10m to Putricide, I found that there were about 200 kills that gave credit. So, don’t sweat this one too much. Tuesday when everything opens up again, you can even do like I plan to and run a few rep runs before raids to bump it up (and hopefully) finish it off, before you hit the instance for real. P.S. If You Haven’t Guessed I got my axe Thursday night, and as far as I know I was the first on Bloodscalp with it. Though a Paladin from Team Sportscoat was spotted with it the following day. So, I can’t say for sure. I do know however, that the axe looks sick and hits like friggin truck. And so far I’m loving it. I’ve gotten a lot of whispers about it (and not just from the Lich King) mostly from players who either know what it is and call me a waste of space for having it, or that have no idea what it is but wanna...

Welcome to another addition of A Worthy Weapon. With the release of Icecrown there’s decisions to make, which weapon is right for tanking? It’s also time to start working on Shadowmourne. I’ll be documenting my progress on the quest line here. A Quick Announcement It’s official, the guild has decided to give me the first Shadowmourne. This is a big honor, and I’m more than just a little excited to get this. Hell, I’ll say it: When I got the news I clapped my hands and giggled like a fat kid with a cupcake. Really though, thank you Face on Fire for this. Icecrown Citadel Weapons Unlike previous tiers, we have several options for tanking weapons. We didn’t get a new version of Inevitable Defeat, but what we did get was a set of solid tanking options with different flavors to suit specific needs. My problem is: right now I’m over the hit and expertise cap. Infact, since I got my new ring I’m WAY over the hit cap. This was one of the reasons why I wanted to get Shadowmourne in the first place, since seeing the gear in this tier I knew I could quite easilly stay capped and just go with the highest TPS/EH weapon possible, Shadowmourne fits the bill. For the Capped Interestingly though, we’ve already had 2 very good tanking options drop in IC. Marrowgar in 25 dropped Bryntroll, the Bone Arbiter. It went to my buddy Sharpobject, a Retadin who’s been facerolling harder than usual (considering everything’s undead). In fact, our Pali tank Zelthas has been commenting that he’s been having threat issues again Sharp with his new Axe. The proc according to completely anecdotal evidence (the Recount breakdown of damage over our 10m IC run) is doing 7% of Sharp’s damage. That’s pretty damned impressive really, even more so when you consider he’s concistently in the top 5 DPS (depending on the fight). Of course, Sharp if you’re reading this you’re welcome to correct me if I’m wrong on just how much damage this thing is doing. But, it looks like the thing procs constantly. Matched with the extra healing from this proc, the sizable Str and Sta, as well as the two sockets (even MORE Sta) it’s certainly a contender for anyone who, like me, is hit/exp capped (without a weapon). For those needing Hit or Expertise, hope still exists. Interestingly enough the first boss of the instance (Marrowgar) provides the second tanking option, which we also got this week. Citadel Enforcer’s Claymore packs a lot of hit. The DPS of this weapon is higher than my previous weapon Mor’kosh, the Bloodreaver. It has more Hit and less crit, but it’s a bit faster and has more Str/Sta. One less socket though. So overall, it’s kinda a sidegrade to Mor’kosh. But considering it’s from the first boss, in 10 regular no less… it’s a great option for any DK tank. Further in the instance we also have the option of Cryptmaker from...

The Worthiest Weapon No, 3.3 didn’t come out today. But, Death Knights everywhere (and to a lesser degree warriors and paladins) had reason to rejoice. Shadowmourne, the long awaited super weapon was unveiled by both Blizzard and various news sites. Blizzard of course released a great little teaser webpage to whet the appetites of all those blood thirsty axe wielding beasts out there – link. In fact, even the epic axe received early on in the quest chain Shadow’s Edge is badass. Now, normally this segment is reserved for items I actually have. This one however, I’ll go ahead and say it: I went into total spazz mode when I found out this item would be in the game, though like many DKs I was hoping for Frostmourne itself (especially considering melees got Illidan’s blades last xpac) but, from a lore standpoint I understand why it had to be this way. And frankly, speaking as an Orc, I’m quite glad it’s an Axe. The interesting thing about this weapon is the drama that’s already ensued. I imagine any DK (tank or otherwise) is going to want this thing, it speaks to the part of us that made a DK in the first place. It’s as Iconic for our class, as a Holy Avenger is to a Paladin (in Dungeons and Dragons). Thematically, it suits us perfectly. It’s not a glowing Gladius, Polearm, etc. It simply oozes, Death Knight. But of course, this alone is not enough to warrant a Death Knight receiving this item, seriously. And let’s face it, the chances of getting this on an RP server are slim to none, in other words: you can’t play the Lore card on this one as a DK and expect any guild to let you have it. But as I said, this thing is the new Drama Bringer… Already on various news sites and forums there are heated discussions about who should get this massive chopper of the damned. In all seriousness, almost all of the people arguing one way or the other won’t get it. The quest chain, though not exactly a Herculean task, but the chain is also nothing to sneeze at. Just the shards of the throne are going to prove difficult (if the current count of 60 stands, and assuming they drop only from bosses). At best, with absolutely perfect luck it would take five weeks of full clears to complete the thing. That said, whoever decides to work on the thing is going to have to be dedicated, absolutely to their guild. They’re going to have to be someone who has flawless (or quite nearly) attendance. And in the case of one of the quests in the chain, it would help to be a tank. The common argument I’m seeing from people as to why this bad boy should not go to a tank, is that all a tank gets from it is more threat. Assuming that were the case, which I assure you it is...

A Worthier Weapon On Thursday night Oct 22nd; I got a new tanking weapon. For those of you keeping track, that’s Titansteel Destroyer, Aesir’s Edge, and now Mor’kosh, the Bloodreaver. Much like the edge, I’ve put a pair of Solid Dragon’s Eyes in it, with Stoneskin Gargoyle that’s a ton of Stamina. Until recently I was Jonesing for the Arena weapon Relentless Gladiator’s Decapitator I still think that the Glad weapon is great for EH, unfortunately to use it… you really need to downgrade to ToC 10 gear to keep hit capped while using it. Using either of the tribute weapons goes a long way to keeping EH and Hit up, without having to downgrade anything. So… back to not caring about arena.

On July 10th; nearly a month after my previous QQ post about being stuck with Titansteel Destroyer I lucked out and finally got an upgrade. Aesir’s Edge from XT Hard Mode in 10 Man Ulduar. Initially, this was not on my wish list. I overlooked it for a couple of reasons, one it’s obviously a very big DPS weapon. Honestly, the melees want it. And I know it. And it doesn’t have any hit or expertise, which is usually one of the first things I look for in tanking weapons. However looking at it again, this thing has a lot to offer a tank. First, there’s a ton of stamina and strength (good start) and the actual damage and speed ratio on this thing is also quite nice. Similarly it’s got Crit and ArP: which as Blood spec can only help my threat. Infact, the only real complaints I have about the thing is the graphic is kinda generic. It’s ok, but it’s not like Askhandi, Greatsword of the Brotherhood. It’s lacking in WOW factor. Especially when you consider it shares the same model as 3 other swords in Ulduar. And of course, the other problem… too much threat. Fights in Ulduar and Trial of the Crusader do at times require tank switching to manage debuffs, Thorim with his Unbalancing Strike and the Northrend Beasts in TOC with the Impale debuff. We had some problems with the warrior and druid who were also tanking trying to get aggro and just not being able to keep it. In the end, I had to turn off attack entirely and wait my turn. Starting my rotation and casting Death Grip only when my Impale faded. So, in the end though no real complaints. I don’t have threat problems even on fights like Hodir Hard Mode. So, with that said I’d like to thank my guild Face on Fire for kicking so much ass lately. We’ve knocked out the new boss as soon as the patch was released, and we’re working our way to summoning Algalon in 10 man Ulduar. More specifically though, I’d like to thank my warrior friend Rukar, fellow user of the 2 handed weapons who passed the Edge to me.

Let me say first, and foremost: This post has nothing to do with the Argent Tournament, also I love the Death Knight class, and moreover I love tanking as a Death Knight. It just feels right. And the class has seen a multitude of buffs and nerfs (tanking and otherwise) since it was introduced with Wrath. However, there’s only one thing about the class that bothers me, and oddly it has nothing to do with the class specifically: itemization. Once upon a time, Blizzard announced they were adding a set of tanking 2 handers to Blacksmithing. DK tanks everywhere dropped a professions and started power levelling smithing. Then, one day… it was announced the 2 handed tanking weapons just would not be happening. The reasoning given was that Blizz didn’t want to actually actively itemize 2 handed tanking weapons for tanking DKs. It wouldn’t make since for items to be made specifically for one class/playstyle (you know like plate armor with healing stats, amirite?) Also, Blizz reps stated they didn’t want DK tanks to be stuck with the same weapon for 6+ months, through entire content cycles. Fast forward: it’s several months into Ulduar content. My guild’s got everything in Ulduar down except Vez, Yogg, and Algalon. And I’m still using Titansteel Destroyer, a smithed 2 handed mace I had crafted days after the release of Wrath. But the question is why? When word that Wrath of the Lich King would include the Death Knight, I decided immediately I would be one, and moreover that I would be a tank. At the time, my guild was under manned. We were short specifically on tanks, so the inclusion of the DK was grounds for celebration. Before it was me (as a paladin) and another paladin tanking, not the ideal setup; though finding a way to split mobs was interesting… Wrath dropped and the race was on, I started the expansion a bit behind. But I had a group of 4 level 70 Shamans to box the new DK with, as well as RAF time to get a quick headstart. I started my DK and began power levelling, I was in my mid 60s before the sun came up and I felt I had to sleep. I wanted to catch up to the Shamans post haste so I could get a look at all Northrend had to offer. Days of grinding later I had a group of 80s, and my DK was hauling around the same weapon he has to this day. It was and still is a great entry level weapon for anyone using 2 handers. For DK tanks; in the absence of any real tanking itemization for our two handers, the Destroyer is a great example of the stats we value. Stamina, Strength (though not absolutely necessary is nice), and Hit. Generally speaking, we end up going for 2 handers with either lots of Sta and Hit or lots of Sta and Expertise. We don’t have much choice in the...

Welcome to My Arsenal, as the title suggests I collect weapons. More particularly Two Handed weapons, I’m a Death Knight so it’s kinda my thing. In putting together my arsenal I adhere to several rules: 1. Each model may be represented only once. That is, if I get two swords with the same model but a different color, I only keep one. 2. Though rare, I do actually hang on to a few one handed weapons as well. These are denoted by an asterisk (*) next to their name. All weapon names are links to the wowhead stats for that weapon.
