Welcome to Business as Usual, my weekly dose of gold reports, wow news, etc… IT DOES A BODY GOOD The holidays are here, and Goblin Warrens all over Azeroth are abuzz with what has long been a Winter Veil tradition providing would-be questers with a nice glass of Ice Cold Milk. But why? In short, people are lazy and/or ignorant. There’s a quest Treats for Great-father Winter that is needed for the Winter Veil meta achievement, and so people grab the milk not realizing that they could buy it from a vendor only a few steps from Great-father Winter himself. Again, it’s either blatant ignorance or laziness, either way it’s more gold for me. Of course, this is chump change (the key word being chump) but it’s become a holiday tradition and it serves as a reminder, people are stupid. And so every year I remember to thank stupidity and sloth… THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT The holidays have a profound effect on the game, people are gone to visit family, etc. Similarly, the kids are all home trying to grind out as much gold as possible before they go back to school. This year there was something else on the horizon, Star Wars: The Old Republic. So, with Skyrim and SWTOR there’s definitely plenty of competition for the attentions of gamers. Myself, I haven’t been on much. Being married for the holidays means you usually have somewhere around 4 sets of households to visit (at minimum) for Christmas, we’re no exception. I spent New Years at my grandmothers, my wife and I spending time and eating great food with my rather large extended family. Christmas Morning, we woke early and made our way to my father’s house for breakfast. At Noon we were off to see my step father, and then my mother in law. We dropped in to see an old friend before making the long drive home. In short, 2 days and two tanks of gas later we were ready to take a well deserved nap. Overall though, the holidays were good to me. And more than anything, it was good to spend some time with loved ones. But that’s not why you’re really here, is it? Read on… LIQUIDATION Between hitting the gold cap and outside interests I haven’t had much time for Azeroth or the Auction House, I’ve put production on hold entirely and continue to liquidate my ample stores of materials hoarded in preparation for the patch. I still have stacks of Inferno Rubies to move, as well as whole banks full of goods. ■ 141 Bold Inferno Ruby ■ 57 Brilliant Inferno Ruby ■ 78 Delicate Inferno Ruby Of course, production will be up again I’m sure, but for now I’m just doing ez mode gold. And buying up pets, mounts and other goodies that I don’t already have on Khaas… THE MONEY SHOT So, with the help of the mobile auction house I’ve been turning a profit on stockpiled goods. Despite the recent distractions...

Welcome to Business as Usual, my weekly dose of gold reports, wow news, etc… BETTER LATE THAN NEVER Yes folks, I did it: I hit the 1 Million Gold cap. You might be wondering what took me so long, especially considering how much gold I’ve made since Cata’s release. The simple fact is I’ve spent a LOT this expansion, and I’m not just talking day to day expenses. For starters, I’ve dropped hundreds of thousands of gold into my guild, Devastation. When Cata was released I made sure we had a solid chunk of gold banked to start out. We had a bank filled with necessary materials to enchant, gem, and craft gear. I even went so far as to buy epics for fresh 85s the first week so we could make an exploratory run on the new instances. I crafted thousands of flasks for the achievement/cauldron recipe. In the times when we’ve run dangerously low on materials, I’ve cleaned out the Auction House and deposited the needed items in our bank. In short, I’ve been doing everything I can to make sure the guild has what it needs to succeed. But, that’s not the only thing I’ve been dropping gold on. Pets, I’ve bought a few. Likewise, I’ve bought BOEs for myself and for my alts. And a lot of profession power leveling for alts as well. And I invested in some guild banks, including a level 25 bank that I’ve since renamed to SRS Business. As you might imagine, a level 25 guild doesn’t come cheap. I dropped 85k for it initially, but I still feel it was a sound investment. I also dropped some serious money investing for the patch, and that’s been paying dividends (as will become clear in a minute). There’s not much to report this week so, I’m going to stick to the gold news for the moment. THE MONEY SHOT There are certainly signs that the gem industry is destabilizing, but this week didn’t show any notable slow down (yet). I called it early this week though, Sunday morning I woke up to find I was just the other side of 1 million gold. So, I collected the weeks profits and decided that was enough for the moment. My business model was pretty straight forward for the past few weeks, and deviated only slightly this week. With the release of Winter Veil I had to indulge in a little holiday tradition where I list Milk on the AH for 10g each. Chump change, sure. But it’s times like this that remind you that people really are that lazy and ignorant. I’ve been selling enchanting materials this week too, it became obvious that I had way more material stored than I’d need to ride out the initial wave of people enchanting their new gear. Also, I figured this might be just the little boost I needed to cap out (glad I did this). Jewelcrafting was almost entirely from red gems, which are still moving...

Welcome to Business as Usual, my weekly dose of gold reports, wow news, etc… DEALS! DEALS! DEALS! Recently when shopping at a local Wal Mart, I found something interesting – Star Craft II: Collector’s Edition. Now, these aren’t exactly rare on eBay, but they typically go for something like $150. But Wall Mart decided to dump these on the shelves at a $20 under the retail price. It was the kind of deal I just couldn’t pass up, I wanted to try the game out for a while and since I was building a new computer it seemed like the right time to shelve a copy for the new machine. Of course, I wouldn’t be much of a Goblin if I didn’t make money off of buying a new game. I bought two copies and eBayed the other, I ended up pocketting $20 after all of the associated expenses… INDUSTRIAL STRENGTH On the subject of the new computer, I received most of the parts a week ago. Unfortunately things have been ridiculous here, so I just haven’t had a chance to get the thing running. But today, I’ve got some time off of work so I’m going to see if I can get the wiring buttoned up and install Windows. The computer itself has as one friend said “a very busy front bezel”, I’ve used a Lamptron FC6 Fan Controller, which so far I love. It has 4 dials for controlling fans, and an LCD panel that gives you fan speed as well as temperature at each fan. Additionally, I’ve added a panel with hot swap bays for SSDs, the panel also acts as a card reader and gives me a couple of extra USB connectors. Then of course there’s the Blue Ray burner and another bay with a pair of LCDs for tracking temps on both my video card and processor. The result is 19 wires running from the front bezel alone! I’ve gone with a few mild mods, I added some nickel plated, spring loaded handles to the top of the case. They’re cheap, they look good, and it makes moving a heavy case around a lot easier. I also added a couple of extra 120mm fans to the top, originally these were for a water cooler – however after getting a look at the major hardware (namely the video card) I decided on a smaller radiator placed at the back. ■ Case: Lian Li V1200B ■ Motherboard: ASUS Crosshair V Formula AM3+ Gaming Motherboard ■ Processor: AMD FX-8150 Zambezi 3.6GHz Socket AM3+ Eight-Core Processor ■ Video Card: ASUS Radeon HD 6950 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 ■ Memory: CORSAIR Vengeance 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 1600 ■ Power Supply: CORSAIR Professional Series Gold 750W Modular Power Supply ■ Internal Storage: Corsair Force Series GT 60GB SATA III Internal SSD (x2) ■ External Storage: Seagate 2TB External Drive ■ Cooling: Corsair Hydro Series H80 Extreme Performance Liquid CPU Cooler ■ Fans: COOLER MASTER SickleFlow 120 R4 120mm Silent operation...

Welcome to Business as Usual, my weekly dose of gold reports, wow news, etc… WAITING FOR SUPERMAN My more observant readers may have noticed a real lack of me lately, of course guild members already knew I’ve been busy with the really real world. There’s the holidays and work to consider, and of course my young puppy Leo. But that’s not the whole story… IS IT GETTING HEAVY? So what have I been doing in the past month of seeming inactivity? Well, I’ve been writing a lot. Currently, I have about 5 articles I’m cleaning up for Cracked.com. Yep, I’m trying my hand at being a hired geek, of course it’s freelance work so there’s no guarantee they’ll buy all or even anything I write. But, it’s more likely than becoming a rock star at this point. And of course there’s the ever present holiday rush, my wife handles the yearbook and school paper here. So, for the next two weeks she’s putting in 14 hr days getting pictures and things before school dismisses for Christmas. On that topic, there’s also the shopping to do. Since I’m no longer estranged from the bulk of my family, holiday shopping is kinda important again. And of course, I’ve been working on winterizing our apartment. The building is from the late 1800s and winters here can be brutal, so some preparation is a must. If that wasn’t enough, there’s the fact my wife and I are both in a better position financially speaking than we have been in previous years. That means, we can do things like go get Sushi or steak. We can afford a new television and/or computer. Then of course, there’s Skyrim (yeah, there’s that). When you have the combination of a new 55 inch tv, a new XBox and a game like Skyrim… let’s just say you’re not going outside for a while. And what about World of Warcraft? As I said in my last post, PANDAMONIUM! the seven year itch is here. And I’ve taken some time to reflect on my time in WoW. By the time Blizzcon came around, my continued existence in game was questionable at best. Blizzard had a weekend to earn back some of that lost good will, and really Day 1 was the most important. Mists of Pandaria excited me, more than Cataclysm ever did. Patch 4.3 brought a few things to whet my appetite before the expansion, but not enough to make me go balls deep in the game again. But what I’ve learned from all of this, the future is still not so certain… IT’S JUST TOO HEAVY FOR SUPERMAN TO LIFT If Cataclysm has taught me anything, it’s that even World of Warcraft is mortal. The game may not be shut down entirely like Hellgate: London, but an EverQuest like decline is a real possibility. That realization led me to another, even if wow is no longer a significant factor I still want to write about games and my experiences...

Welcome to Business as Usual, the weekly segment on all that glitters. OR LACK THEREOF This is going to be a short one, I haven’t really had much motivation to log in to WOW lately. I actually skipped the game entirely over the weekend. I’ve got a lot of things going on the side right now, so updates are likely to be sparse for a week or two. I’ll have more to say on the subject soon I’m sure. THE BLOODSCALP REPORT As I said above, I actually skipped about half the week of online sales time. However, I still managed a respectable set of numbers. In fact, I would’ve been quite satisfied with the showing had I been going at it hot and heavy all week. I’m continuing to work on my alts, so I expect to spend a little time and gold on leveling/professions for a couple of the little guys soon. Sorry for the word shortage this week, but it’s only temporary.
Welcome to Business as Usual, the weekly segment on all that glitters. WHAT DO I KNOW ABOUT DIAMONDS? Last week I mentioned the PTR and some of the imminent changes in the 4.3 patch, since then information has begun to trickle in. One of the most interesting pieces of info is that Epic gems are available from Transmutes. Unless you’re new here, you know that’s kind of a big deal for me: the Alchemist Army is awakened. Unfortunately, we’re still lacking some information so a full on joygasm may be a bit premature. For starters, we don’t know how to get access the Transmutes in the first place. Theoretically, the transmutes could be from Discoveries. It’s conceivable even that Blizzard may add a Research method to gain the Transmutes, this could be either from a daily ability or from BOE drops (think Book of Glyph Mastery) or even an item only available from the new raid. There’s also the question of the transmutes themselves, will they make lower level materials into an epic gem OR will it make one epic gem into a different gem? Right now there’s a lot of assumption being thrown around, I think many players are assuming that it will be Rare gems (+ something else) to Epic gems. So, for now I advise cautious optimism, at least till we have more of the facts. When we know how the transmute recipes will be gained and what it will take to craft the Epic gems, calm down. In short, slow your roll… DON’T THEY COME FROM ANTWERP? In the meantime, I’m maintaining my stock of Gems and Truegold while building up Volatiles. Now that I’m back in the gem business I’m keeping closer tabs on my store of Rare gems, I’m keeping a guild bank stocked with a tab of each color and producing enough overflow to manage a respectable foothold in the market. There are two reasons for maintaining this stock, first it’s likely that they will be used in epic gem transmutes, but even if they aren’t sales of Rare gems is like to spike once the new tier goes live. Further, not everyone is going to have access to the Epics initially (if at all) and they’ll be buying my Rares. As for Truegold, with the new transmutes and new patterns for Blacksmithing and other professions Truegold is likely to become more scarce, while also seeing a boon in demand… THE BLOODSCALP REPORT So I managed to liquidate the last of my flasks and potions last week, the margins are a bit lean there so I’ve decided to get out of that market for the time being. I have to say though, I’m glad to be back in the Glyph and Gem markets both are solid earners. Since I’ve brought Cicatriz off the bench to start some alt raiding I dropped some gold on professions (Enchanting & Engineering), this along with the gold I spent on guild banks has me down in recent...

Welcome to Business as Usual, the weekly segment on all that glitters. WARCRAFT ECON As I said last week, technical difficulties have kept me from posting on WarcraftEcon. Thankfully, after hearing from Oligopoly I expect to have my next post up in the near future. My next post is a follow up to my previous post on maximizing storage. I’ve learned a few things about possible pitfalls of buying leveled guilds, so this new post will be detailing the difficulties and ways to deal with them. So stay frosty, it should be a good read. PATCH 4.3 INFO So, apparently we’re supposed to have 4.3 on the PTR this week. Which of course means that the patch itself should be live SOON™. Of course, Pyrite Ore prices have dropped but the wave of panic hasn’t been as pronounced as I thought it might be. Perhaps cooler heads reign on Bloodscalp than I once thought. In either case, I’ve been liquidating portions of my own stockpile, and opening up more storage. I’ve even reactivated my third account for storage, I’ve been toying more and more lately with the idea of dual-boxing production. I played with the idea when Cataclysm was released, using boxing techniques to post and process items while I leveled Khaas. But now, I’m thinking in a different direction. My main interest, is that I could craft and process items simultaneously: prospecting on one account, while I disenchant on the other. Create scrolls on one account, while I mill herbs on the other. For a diverse business like mine, this could mean cutting my production time literally in half in many cases… So, what am I stocking up on? ■ Enchanting Mats Where there’s new gear, there’s a whole new vitality for the enchanting market. Scrolls & Dust will be moving as fast as you can produce them, so having a healthy stockpile of each will put you ahead of the curve. ■ Rare Gems With the news that Epic gems will not be prospected, there’s a bright if brief future for Rare Gems. Players of all stripes will need these rares to fill the slots while they gather their epic gems. And while we’re on the subject of Jewelcrafting… ■ Jewelcrafter’s Tokens Despite the lack of prospected Epic Gems, there is likely to be a call for those tokens: Deisgns. Assuming that the gems are uncut when they drop, raiders will need someone to cut them, that’s where we come in. ■ Chimera Eye Not to get “too” tin foil hat here, but it’s quite likely that you won’t be the only one using your tokens for designs. Add to this there may be more uses for Chimera Eye in the patch than there are even now, if that’s the case you can expect these to become a bit more desirable, therefore profitable. If you can find some cheap now, hold onto them. ■ Transmog Items BOE epics from world bosses, Molten Core, and other places are going...

Welcome to Business as Usual, the weekly segment on all that glitters. WARCRAFT ECON NOTE I’m working on a pretty meaty post for the WarcraftEcon site, however I’ve been getting some 404 errors while trying to post for the past two weeks. Anyhow, gives me more time to work the thing, meanwhile I’ll be in touch with Oligopoly to see we can sort out the problem. PATCH 4.3 INFO Monday morning MMO-Champion as well as other news sites reported some 4.3 information, most notably for the gold minded individuals out there was the quote below, from the interview with Greg (Ghostcrawler) Street. Epic gems will drop in the new raid in Normal and Heroic only. Each player gets a geode when a boss is killed which has a small chance to contain an epic gem, most will have rare gems. It is rare enough to take all of 4.3 to replace all of your red rare quality gems with red epic gems. “Quite a few” new profession recipes will be added. Read the full 4.3 Article and Interview with Ghostcrawler on MMO-Champion OK, MAYBE PANIC A LITTLE Obviously, I’m not jumping for joy. I was really hoping we wouldn’t be seeing epic gems in this fashion, again. Of course, there’s a few unanswered questions here. First and foremost, what about the patterns? The vague statement about new recipes does not necessarily mean that we will even get new cuts. It only means that there will be new recipes, and that is something we already knew. But more to the point, will these gems come pre cut or will JCs be cutting them? If we do cut them, it would follow that they will be BOE. However, considering the comments about it taking the entirety of the patch to fill your sockets with gems, it’s possible we’ll be seeing a return to the pre cut gems of BC 5 man infamy. Right now, it’s just too damned early to tell. Rare quality gems are still there, even if we can’t transmute them to epic. Even if we can’t prospect for epics. We still have the Rares to contend with. Since Epics are going to be a pipe dream (at least for a while) there may be renewed interest in the rares. Tinfoil Hat Engaged… In the new model, it looks like the obvious path to Epic gems is running random raids. Since the raid bosses themselves have a chance of rewarding players with epic gems. Assuming we have a limit to the number of available random raids we can run per week, it’s feasible that we could random our way to epic gems. Oh shit… isn’t this exactly contrary to the new raiding model in Cataclysm? Wasn’t the idea of having normal and heroic share a lockout to keep people from feeling that they needed to run the same raids multiple times per week or fall behind? Tinfoil Hat Disengaged… CRYING FOWL Of course, there’s other things. Blizzard didn’t want to...

Welcome to Business as Usual, the weekly segment on all that glitters. RECENT ACQUISITIONS Last week I talked about storage, and I mentioned that you can find guilds in trade chat (sometimes at great prices). This week, I’ve found another deal. A while back I made a post on the server forums stating that I was on the hunt for a higher level guild, 23+ preferably, with the price being negotiable and wholly dependent on various factors: level, number of bank slots, and contents of said bank slots. This post resulted in the acquisition of a level 19 guild and more recently a level 25 guild. Now, I won’t beat around the bush – I bought the level 25 guild for quite a bit of gold. What on Earth for? For perks of course. Now, I already have the level 19 guild, but it doesn’t have Bountiful Bags. Having access to all of the perks makes my army of alts just that much more useful. Both guilds offer some unique opportunities, the level 25 for instance has few achievements, but has a lot of perks. The level 19, is missing some perks (most notably Bountiful Bags) but it has a lot of achievements/rewards, like the Dark Phoenix mount. One of these guilds will be renamed to SRS Business in the future, and the other to Business as Usual. Unfortunately, this acquisition didn’t exactly go without a hitch. Once the dust settles, I’ll explain in more detail… Gold Earned From Auctions Recently, an old friend made an observation about how the previously buggy statistic tracking done in the Achievement panel seemed to be working. No longer did it cycle back and forth when you earned too much gold, it now shows a real number. So, Nephora inevitably asked – just how much gold have I made from Auctions? Well, that question requires a little math because frankly I sell things with my entire account, keeping different items separate makes tracking margins in different markets that much easier at the end of the week. So, I logged each character on and added it up, I’ll admit – even I was taken aback… ■ 557,021g Khaas ■ 1,077,428g Druid ■ 401,986g Hunter ■ 551,997g Hunter ■ 258,729g Paladin ■ 884,327g Priest ■ 322,993g Rogue ■ 248,263g Shaman ■ 499,942g Warlock ■ 1,891,788g Warrior 6,694,474g – TOTAL THE BLOODSCALP REPORT It’s a good week, I’m still down. In fact after my recent purchase I’m WAY down. I dropped to 200K at one point, but I’ve got a good stock of materials for the upcoming 4.3 and much of the items I’m sending to storage now are simply miscellaneous crap gathered at random while playing the game. So from here, the numbers should be trending upward. Flipping is still proving to be a solid earner, though I really haven’t had a lot of time to do it this week. Enchanting Scrolls spiked this week, though I can’t say exactly why at this time. Other markets...
