It may not be politically correct, but there’s definitely something important about the old saying “too many chiefs, not enough Indians”. When you hear it, you can immediately identify the problem. In WOW you could just as easily say “too many officers and not enough raiders” but it doesn’t carry the same sense of profound recognition. Today, I want to focus on the Indians and making better ones… Of Chiefs and Indians Everyone wants to be the chief, I know I did. As a child, I played football and I wanted to be the quarterback. As I grew older I realized that it’s okay being a lineman, tight end, or or even a place kicker. Each has an important part to play, and without them you don’t have a working team. The same applies to raids, they just don’t work unless you have both raid leaders and the raiders themselves. Certainly there’s still a gut reaction to that vaunted position of officer or raid leader, on the surface it seems glamorous. Really though, it’s a lot of hard work. And it’s a lot of responsibility, the sad truth is that most people simply aren’t equipped to be the chiefs. But that’s okay, you do have an important part to play… Good Little Indians To begin, you have to actually gain entrance to a guild. To do that often requires you to apply through some type of formal process. A word of advice, take the application process seriously. You don’t have to (and you shouldn’t) be a sycophant but be sincere. Read the stickies and follow the directions, even when they sound like a joke. Often times guilds will put questions in that they think people will ignore, this is to filter out people who don’t take the process seriously. This gives guilds an instant idea of how well someone can follow directions and how seriously they take entrance into the guild. If an applicant can’t follow the simplest of directions on a short application form, then can they be expected to follow complex directions over vent on progression? Now, what do you do once you get into a guild? Preparedness Look at the picture below: Even if your guild does like to play things fast and loose, you still need to be on time. If you’re in the Auction House when you’re supposed to be at the instance, you are doing it wrong… I can’t stress this enough, raid times are important. Nine to twenty-four people are counting on you to be there, on time, ready to raid. Waste their time at your peril. With that in mind, it’s up to you to ensure that you are absolutely prepared for each raid. Your guild may provide consumables and other raid supplies, but be sure to get these before raid time. Get your repairs taken care of, grab enchanting mats or scrolls for that item (or items) that you’ve been praying will drop. Wanting to do a little PVP or Heroic,...

The Master List A while back I did an interview with warcraft econ, in the interview I included my Master List – a list of items I craft on a regular basis to generate large amounts of gold. The main idea behind this list is that I try to maintain the items on the list, in the quantities listed. With a list like this it’s assumed that inventory will not be sold out in a twenty four hour period. The important thing is to maintain stock as necessary. There are several addons that can facilitate your inventory maintenance, but for now let’s focus on the list itself and how you can create your own. Creating the List For the sake of practicality, let’s focus on Enchanting Scrolls. There are two types, weapon scrolls and armor scrolls. There are more armor type weapons to enchant on each character than weapons, so logic dictates we make more armor scrolls than weapon. Initially I suggest making a 2:1 ratio of armor scrolls to weapon scrolls, you can (and should) adjust this ratio as you become more comfortable with the market. But now the question is, which scrolls should you make? As I’ve said before, Research and Development is key when entering a new market. You can watch the Auction House doing Auctioneer Scans, etc. Even sounding the market out with some test scrolls and watching Bean Counter. However, there are more expedient ways of forming your list. Two web sites in particular wowPopular (hereafter refered to as WP) and the Undermine Journal, both of these offer some useful insights into new markets. The Journal of course gives you pricing data on various items in an easy to read format for various servers, unfortunately it’s early on in it’s development so currently might not be a whole lot of help if you’re server isn’t supported. WP on the other hand is a site dedicated to listing things and organizing them by popularity, the data is gathered directly from the Armory. With WP you can select enchants and see slot by slot which enchants are most popular according to the armory. Using this tool removes preconceived notions about the value of particular enchants and gives you the raw data, which enchants being used the most. Going through the list you see a popularity ranking by each item, 3 stars and lower I wouldn’t bother with. Above that, it’s probably worth crafting. Another thing is that you may opt to craft items in quantity based on their popularity – each star representing a single item you’re crafting at a time. Note: If you do choose this route, you’ll need a lot of materials and a steady source for them. Just as importantly if you are going to do something like this you have to be sure your server can support it, high population with multiple raiding guilds would be a great place for something like that.
What is SlyProfits? Taken from the SlyProfits Project Page: “SlyProfits adds an extra tab to the Auction House Interface. The tab is designed to show the profits that can be made from various trade skills. It works out the current buyout price of the item, the current cost of mats for a stack of the item and calculates the profit that can be made taking into account the standard AH cut and vendor price for mats such as vials. Additionally it allows you to view the mats for each item and easily buyout the required number using a slider to control how many of each item you wish to make. The addon started out as a tool for myself as i was manually scanning the auction house calculating which Flask was most profitable to make with the booming post 3.1 prices. At the time i was making in excess of 5k a week buying/selling Flasks and decided to automate the process so others could do the same. Since then various tradeskills have been added and a way of adding custom recipes has been created.” TLDR Version: It does your spreadsheet-type cost analysis for you in game without Excel. Configuration and Use Anytime you visit an Auctioneer you will see a new tab at the bottom of the Auction Window, clicking the SlyProfits tab will take you to the SlyProfits Scan window (pictured below). Click for fullsize The first thing you’ll want to do is hit the Config Recipes button. First suggestion: uncheck all boxes except one, picking each profession individually will allow you to weed out any items that you don’t make regularly. I don’t suggest using the import button, this will overload your scan data with everything you can make. Let’s face it, you’re not going to make and sell everything you are capable of crafting. Cherry picking which items to scan for also has the advantage of reducing scan time. When I first set up SlyProfits I kept a Steno Pad next to my keyboard and made a list of the items I wanted to make regularly. This was the beginning of the Master List I’ve talked about in previous posts. Once the list is completed you can start adding individual items as you see fit use the New button at the bottom of the Config window. The materials you add and their quantities are completely up to you, which is important (see below). Creative Configuration An example of creative input for this config window is Eternal Belt Buckle, creating five of these requires: 20 Saronite Bar, 5 Eternal Earth, 5 Eternal Shadow, and 5 Eternal Water -OR- 40 Saronite Ore, 5 Eternal Earth, 5 Eternal Shadow, and 5 Eternal Water. The difference here is that Ore is generally cheaper than bars, depending on the disparity in price you may want to get Ore and smelt it yourself (if that’s an option). As you might’ve guess you want to also input the amount of items you wish to...

We All Go a Little Crazy Sometimes At approximately 2 AM I completed the Insane in the Membrane meta, it’s been a long process. Mostly because I’ve been very casual about completing it. Since hitting the cap I’ve focused on getting it done, finding the Librams (Libram of Focus, Libram of Protection, Libram of Rapidity) and the Blood of Heroes for Rapidity especially to be a bottle neck. But I finally got it done. Which makes me the first and only Death Knight on Bloodscalp with the title “the Insane”. Thanks for all the support guys. XOXOKhaas the Insane

Alts and How to Manage Them

Recently I talked about Gear Rating Sites; how they can help you establish and meet goals in your WoW career. Today I saw this post on Banana Shoulders that has led me to revisit this topic. A few other things have happened to lead me to consider this topic in greater detail as well, for starters I’ve recently consolidated my characters. With RAF and mulit-boxing I’ve amassed a fairly large stable of alts, I have recently however decided to curtail my boxing habits. Boxing has been good to me, but it just doesn’t make sense to me to do it anymore. I won’t deny I enjoy it. In essence, I’m more interested in tanking for my guild than five-boxing heroics ad nauseum. Throw in the much anticipated faction transfer service and I’m finally able to play my old level 60 main, Xombi. This warlock has been languishing on the Malorne server, virtually unplayed since the release of Burning Crusade. Levelling him up now and replacing all that vanilla tier gear and other beautiful purple goodness won’t be so painful since I haven’t touched him in a couple of years. This brings us to something very pertinent to the discussion of goals and managing them: I now have 10 characters (one of each class) on my main server. All are level 60 and above, in varying levels of gear. Now what? Alt-Itis: It happens, and it can be either a very good thing or a very bad thing. Most of the time when people think of alts, they automatically go to the negative aspect: “Soandso doesn’t raid with us this week, he wants to play his Huntard lulz“. Obviously, this is a very real possibility. But it’s a little short-sighted to think of it only in this way. Take for example my own situation, I’m the main tank. When we raid it’s my job to take the boss and have my way with him, while making sure he doesn’t have his way with me (or the raid for that matter). This is fine, this is what I signed up for. However, there is a point where you’re not getting loot anymore. There’s nothing left in the zone, and you’re doing a stressful job to help guild mates get gear.I’ve seen a lot of dedicated tanks burn themselves out and quit WoW altogether because of this very issue. There’s a lot of ways to deal with it, one is alts. Play a healer for a while (trust me no one is going to ask you to come tank Nexus if you’re playing a Priest). Of course, you’ll still get asked to go to those same instances… but you’ll be doing something different and possibly getting some loot that this character needs, you’ll get to experience the feeling of progress, achievement. Of doing something that is immediately important to you. It is in this way that an alt can be a god send to the burnt out tank, and really to the raiders...

SECTION 1 – BASIC TRAINING Welcome to the srsbusiness guide to Death Knight tanking. As tanks, our job is to piss things off and live to talk about it. But if you’ve come here, you already know that. I’ve compiled the information in this guide to give beginners and veterans alike a source for meaningful information and analysis pertaining to the intricacies of our job. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This guide would not be possible without the work of other like-minded enthusiasts, for their varied contributions I would like to thank each of them. So to Gravity, Insolence, Satorri, Wake and the rest of the community at Pwnwear.com I thank you. + INTRODUCTION TO THE DEATH KNIGHT The newest tank and WoW’s first Heroic class, Death Knights borrow greatly from several sources. DKs have a set of six Runes that function ostensibly similar to combo points, these Runes are used to activate special attacks and abilities. These attacks generate Runic Power, which is the DK equivalent to Rage. This Runic Power (or RP) is used to fuel certain attacks and abilities. And now with the advent of Runic Empowerment, our RP based attacks also have a chance of refreshing a random Rune. This reciprocal approach to resource mechanics is at the heart of the Death Knight playstyle, so keep this in mind if you are considering becoming one of these powerful plate wearers. It is a complex class that is at once easy to play, but difficult to master. Due to the complexity of the Death Knight’s abilities, and the broad toolset available to a DK tank, there is a lot of terminology to familiarize yourself with. For brevity sake, these terms have been abbreviated, the key to these abbreviations is provided below. + COMMON ACRONYMS: HS – Heart Strike PS – Plague Strike IT – Icy Touch OB – Obliterate DS – Death Strike RS – Rune Strike NS – Necrotic Strike FeS – Festering Strike BB – Blood Boil DnD – Death and Decay DC – Death Coil BP – Blood Plague FF – Frost Fever Pest – Pestilence IBF – Icebound Fortitude AMS – Anti-Magic Shell AoD – Army of the Dead RP – Runic Power ERW – Empower Rune Weapon SoB – Scent of Blood WoN – Will of the Necropolis BCB – Blood-caked Blade RunEmp – Runic Empowerment DarkSim – Dark Simulacrum + RUNE SYSTEM TERMINOLOGY: ■ Rune Set: 1 Blood, Frost, and Unholy rune, 3 runes available in two sets to all Death Knights. ■ FU Pair: 1 Frost and 1 Unholy rune, frequently used together for moves. ■ Rune Blackout: when all 6 runes are on cooldown and are not available. ■ Sleeper Rune: the second rune of any same sort that is waiting for the other rune to finish its regeneration in order to start its own. + GENERAL GAME JARGON & TERMINOLOGY ■ Mob: an enemy, monster, or computer controlled non-player character (npc). ■ Proc: a spell, talent, enchant, or glyph effect that triggers...
