Welcome to Idle Hands, my weekly segment where I discuss conversions, painting, and strategy for the Warhammer tabletop game…
THIS WEEK
On Saturday GW released the new Warriors of Chaos Army Book along with a bevy of models from the frozen North. I made a trip to my local gaming shop to pick up the essentials: the new Army Book, a pack of Lore Cards, the newest White Dwarf, and a Chimera kit. I spent the weekend pouring over the book, there are plenty of beautiful pictures throughout the book (some new, some old). And of course, it’s all full color in a hard back binding. With Shiloh behind me and a year worth of other tournaments to look forward to, it’s time to start plotting my year.
THE QUE
There’s actually four separate army lists I’m hoping to finish this year, starting with the Ogre Kingdoms army (already in progress). Followed by a return to Chaos with an updated version of my MSU tourney list and a Monster Mash list for when I’m felling good and fluffy. The good news is that there’s a fair amount of overlap, and some things that have already been made (like 6 of the trolls for example). And at the end? Vampire Counts, I’ve actually got most of these models already. But there will be extensive conversions involved, below are the lists for these four armies as they currently stand.

THE TRIBE OF THE FOUR WINDS
I’ve got some serious fluff ideas for my OK army, these guys make their home on the edge of the Troll Country and have succumbed to mutation at the hands of the forces of Chaos. It is said that these Ogres hear the whispers of four distinct voices on the winds, despite the blandishments of the four Gods the Tribe has thus far not declared an fealty to any single patron. They stand undivided, the factions within the tribe showing signs of mutation and influence from all of the Chaos Gods.

These Ogres are based on the list that won the UK Masters this year, I made a few minor changes to bring it up to 2500 points for Rock Wars in Little Rock, which also uses Swedish Comp. This is a very MSU style Ogre list and should be very fun to play.
Still, my first love is Warriors of Chaos. And as I learned this year, it pays to think ahead. So, with the Ogres knocked out I’ll be focusing on revising my MSU tourney list for the Shiloh Slaughter for next year…

THE RAVENHOST V2.0
I still hope to run an MSU style list for my Warriors, but the new book offers some intriguing new possibilities as well as some restrictions. My number of drops is the same, but some units have been completely replaced. Marauder Horsemen are gone as well as the Marauder Horde. These have been replaced by the new Gorebeast Chariots. My model count was cut nearly in half, but I’ve maintained a lot of threat saturation. Nurgle is clearly the winner as far as Lores go right now, there’s so much versatility offered in the spells. Death isn’t half bad either, especially with the increased range provided by the winged Daemon Prince.
Additionally, the Warshrine has been changed a bit. I’ll be mounting my BSB on this thing for now. It’s got better movement than before and has a few bonuses, most notably offering another dispel target that should help tie up my opponent during the Magic Phase. In general, my list has gone very heavy on Khorne. The Warriors have gone that direction and dropped their shields and halberds in favor of extra hand weapons (glad I magnetzied everything already). This list will actually come together pretty quickly, I’m hoping to get some test games in as soon as April.
2496 pts, 57 models, 11 units (+2 independents).

With the tournament so far away, I know I’ll go through several iterations of this list before I settle on something concrete. But this I think will be a good place to start.
Following that, it’s time for the Monster Mash. There is a little bit of overlap between my two Chaos lists, additionally some of this list is made of things I want to try out to possibly run in the list above. So, this will be a good one to follow up with since most of it would be painted during testing anyway.

THE MONSTER MASH
I’ve wanted a Troll list for a while, the idea of a monstrous horde is very appealing, even more so since the release of the new book. Frankly, it’s entirely possible I’ll take a variation of this list to a couple of tourneys because it just looks fun to play. The best thing about this list is the speed, lots and lots of speed.
2495 pts, 31 models, 9 units, 1 independent.
Daemon Prince (Level 4, MoN, General)
+ Lore of Nurgle

The bulk of this army has regen, so obviously every army I play is going to have Flaming Attacks. Still, I anticipate a lot of fun with this one.
Finally, my Vampire Counts. I picked up the Army Deal this year, my first ever WFB army was the original Vampire Counts, so it was bound to happen sooner or later…

THE GREY COURT
The army is a bit fluffy, in that it’s themed around a deposed Strigoi Ghoul King. He holds court from the burial crypts of a long forgotten Empire city, now he’s returned with the help of his acolytes to restore himself to his rightful place as king of the Grey Throne.
Total Points: 2498 9 Units, 112 models.

This one will involve a few conversions, it’s a pretty straightforward list though. It will likely be the most involved of all of these lists since I’m putting together so many extra Zombies for summoning purposes.
MALEVOLENT CREATIONS
I’ve gotten started on my Ogres, I found very quickly that the entire army would fit quite nicely on a Battle Foam X Board, I’ll be spending a fair amount of time on the board itself making a good looking display for this army. As for the army itself, there will be a variety of conversions throughout the army, but they will definitely have the taint of Chaos. Which is all the better, means I can use these as Chaos Ogres in my main army.
I’ve already started some initial work with the Green Stuff on some of the models, with such a low model count I don’t expect these to take long. And I’ve pretty much worked out my color palette. The will be painted in general to match my Warriors, though their skin will be a bit darker.
COMING SOON
My goal for next week is to have a test model ready for the Ogres, I should also have the basic models on their bases ready for primer. I’m also going to be getting my hands dirty with the Super Dungeon Explore models, I want to get them in a project box and start assembly so I can run some games ASAP. It’s going to be a busy year, and with the people I met during Shiloh I expect I might have some commissions to show off before too long.

Don’t forget to follow me on Twitter and to see more of my projects and info about my commission work check out the Facebook Page
